The hymen? (forgive the spelling... it's late for me...)
This is a small muscle that stretches over the opening of the vagina. When you have sex for the first time, ride a bike, or use a tampon, this muscle gets stretched. (In the case of loss of virginity- the term "popping the cherry"- yeah, that's what it refers to. lovely...)
Anywho, when a female first loses her virginity, the muscle stretches to make room for the penis, and, as a result, may sometimes tear, causing a slight amount of discomfort and bleeding. The bleeding is usually nothing to light spotting, depending, of course, on a number of things. The discomfort usually goes away within 24 hours.
Remember that the decision to have sex for the first time is a major one, and should only be done after careful consideration. Everything really does change after that. Believe me. There is so much to consider- emotionally, are you and your partner ready? And are you educated about protection, birth control, std's, and teen pregnancy? I, for one, made the decision when I was 18 years old. And, though I was married when she was concieved, I am now pregnant with my first child- at age 20. Something to think about... all in all, it has to be a decision that best suits you. Period.
Good luck!
