Question by Walker L: Why do Sikhs of India kill their daughters?

According to 2001 census figures in India, Child sex ratio (no. of girls against boys in 0-5 age group) in Sikh dominent Indian state of Punjab is at a low 874/1000. As one oft repeated legend tells, Dharam Chand, grandson of Sikh founder guru Nanak reportedly bade all the Bedi Sikhs to kill their daughters as soon as they were born.In Fatehgarh Sahib, infamous for the lowest juvenile sex ratio in the country, the figure plummets to 754/1000, with Khamano block teetering at 628/1000. But unofficially the figures that we receive today are much worse. A recent survay in Outlook magazine (27 February 2006) quoted the CSR figure in some districts of Punjab at a precarious 529/1000 (Nawanshahr’s Dhanduha village) and even an astounding 429/1000 (Jalandhar’s Gobindpura). Punjab has rightly been stigmatized with the title dheemaru (daughter destroying) state of India.

This isn't the only country this happens in, the Sikhs in India are not the only ones as other places in India do too. China does it also.
